Portugal highway tolls: electronic-only roads, how a foreign car pays and the fine

Portugal's motorways have two toll systems. See which roads have no booths, how a foreign-plated car pays, what each option costs and what a missed toll means.

Portugal highway tolls work in two ways, and the second one catches visitors out. On motorways with traditional toll plazas you take a ticket or stop at a barrier and pay in cash or by card. On the exclusively electronic motorways there are only gantries, nobody to pay, and a car with foreign plates needs a payment method activated before it drives on them. Infraestruturas de Portugal, the company behind the PT Tolls site, sets that out for foreign-registered vehicles. Below: the two systems, what each payment option for a foreign car costs, what to do after a missed toll and the fine, as on the pages read on 17 October 2026.

Portugal highway tolls: the two systems

Traditional toll plazasExclusively electronic
What you seeBarriers where vehicles stop, with manual lanes and electronic lanesGantries over the motorway, no booths, a panel by each gantry showing the toll
How the car is recognisedTicket at the entrance, or a device or number plate reading in an electronic laneEquipment at the gantry reads the vehicle and its plate and charges the section
Cash or bank card on the spotYes, in a manual laneNo manual payment
Foreign carPay manually, or use an electronic lane with a payment methodMust have an activated means of payment

Signs mark both. The toll at each gantry depends on the vehicle class, which PT Tolls says follows height and number of axles and is identified automatically.

What a foreign-registered car can use

PT Tolls lists these for foreign plates. The administrative fee is added to the toll.

OptionHow it worksCost listedValid
EasytollA bank card (Visa, Mastercard or Maestro) is linked to the plate, online or at one of four stations near the borders1 euro subscription, 0.32 euro per trip30 days from registration
TollcardPrepaid card of 5, 10, 20 or 40 euros, activated by text message; bought on the CTT website, in CTT shops or at motorway service areas1 euro, 0.32 euro per trip1 year after activation
Go TollA Via Verde subscription, online only, paid by credit card or direct debit0.77 euro, only in months of use, plus 0.32 euro per tripWhole motorway network
Go Toll & BeyondVia Verde subscription with a device1.99 euro a month, only in months of use, no administrative fee (price for customers with electronic statements)Whole motorway network

Easytoll and Tollcard do not cover the two crossings run by Lusoponte, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Vasco da Gama Bridge. At traditional plazas they work only in the lanes marked for electronic payment. PT Tolls says to buy a means of payment before you travel, with validity that covers the whole trip.

Check the plate and the receipt

The FAQ tells you to read the machine receipt or the confirmation email and check that the plate number is right, and it offers a correction option on the website. A Tollcard that is active overrides an Easytoll subscription, so charges may not show if you bought both. And Easytoll charges can take up to two weeks to be processed, during which no receipt is available.

Lanes, lights and a wrong exit

If the yellow light flashes in an electronic lane, the system did not detect a device. With Easytoll or Tollcard the plate is read by image and linked to your account, so the toll is still charged correctly. Enter at a manual lane and leave through an electronic lane with a valid Easytoll or Tollcard, and the toll for the trip actually made is charged. Do it the other way round, entering electronically and exiting at a manual lane, and no valid ticket is presented: the FAQ says a fee of twice the maximum chargeable at the exit barrier applies under Article 6(d) of Law 25/2006. You can send a reasoned statement saying where you entered so the concessionaire can review it.

If you drove an electronic-only road without paying

PT Tolls says to settle the amount with the operator responsible for that toll system. You can look up your journeys on any of the portals, whichever concession you drove on, and if you cannot pay on the one you used you are sent to the right one. Its home page links Ascendi, Globalvia, ViaLivre and Via Verde; its FAQ lists Ascendi, ViaLivre, Globalvia and the Toll Payment Portal, and says payment can also be made to enforcement officers on duty on the motorways. The UK government's travel advice for Portugal points to the same Toll Payment Portal. Post-payment at CTT, Payshop or a Multibanco reference, within 15 working days, exists only for Portuguese plates, and the pages give no equivalent deadline for foreign plates, so do not leave it.

Not paying is an administrative offence. The FAQ puts the fine at no less than five times the toll and never below 25 euros, with a ceiling of twice that minimum within the General Tax Offences Regime, and says concessionaires inspect often, together with the police.

Hire cars and devices from home

A hire company in Portugal must equip each car with a device and subscribe to a toll system under Decree-Law 84-C/2022, according to the FAQ. Many already do, and you can ask for the service at pick-up so tolls are debited directly. For a Portuguese-plated hire car with no device, tolls can be paid later at CTT or Payshop, though the billing period may not match your rental dates.

A device from another country works only if its issuer is on the list of recognised issuers. The July 2026 list names mostly Spanish banks and cards plus companies such as Bip&Drive, Telepass, Tolltickets, Easytrip and EuroWag, and no UK issuer. Ask your issuer to confirm that it works on electronic lanes in Portugal before you rely on it. For how a similar badge works next door, see the French télépéage tag, and for the system types in general, how toll roads, free-flow charges and vignettes work.

Working out the cost

PT Tolls has a toll simulator that totals a journey, and the panel at each gantry shows the toll for your vehicle class. The pages read give no per-kilometre rate. Coming from Spain, its motorway tolls work differently: a ticket or a fixed amount at a plaza, in cash or by card. For Ireland's M50 toll, see eFlow tolls on the M50.

What BlitzBuddy does

BlitzBuddy does not pay or calculate tolls. It is free, with no ads and no subscription, and it is available for iPhone; the Android version is coming soon. Where speed camera warnings are allowed is covered in the country-by-country rules for camera warning apps. More guides on tolls, vignettes and low emission zones are under driving abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay tolls in Portugal with a foreign car?

Yes. Infraestruturas de Portugal says drivers of foreign-registered vehicles also pay on the exclusively electronic motorways, and that they must have an activated means of payment before they drive on them.

Can I pay cash on Portugal's electronic-only motorways?

No. Those roads have no toll booths and no manual payment. Manual payment, in cash or by bank card, is valid only on motorways with a traditional toll system.

How long is Easytoll valid and what does it cost?

PT Tolls says an Easytoll registration is valid for 30 days. It lists 1 euro for the subscription plus 0.32 euro administrative fee for each trip, on top of the toll.

What is the fine for not paying a toll in Portugal?

According to the PT Tolls FAQ, at least five times the toll, and never less than 25 euros, with a maximum of twice that minimum within the general tax offences limits. Settle a missed toll on the operators' portals straight away.

Can a foreign-plated car pay the toll afterwards at a post office?

Not for electronic-only roads. The FAQ says post-payment at CTT, within 15 working days, is available only for vehicles with Portuguese plates. Foreign plates use Easytoll, Tollcard, Go Toll, Via Verde or a compatible device.

In Portugal: your speed, your trips and other drivers' reports, no camera warnings.
