A French toll road tag is called a télépéage badge: a small box fixed to the windscreen that opens the lanes marked with an orange t and settles your tolls on one monthly bill. You do not need one. The French ministry says the badge is not compulsory, and other ways to pay exist. If you want one, Vinci Autoroutes sells the Pass Ulys, Bip&Go sells the Liber-t badge and Fulli, a brand of APRR and AREA, sells its own. Their occasional-driver formulas cost 2.20, 2.10 and 1.90 euros for each month you use them, with tolls on top. This guide compares the three and covers UK bank accounts, barrier-free motorways and what a tag does not cover, from pages read on 16 October 2026.

Do you need a toll tag in France?

No. On the ministry's free-flow page (updated on 20 October 2025) the badge is the most reliable and most practical way to pay a barrier-free toll, but not compulsory. Without one you pay by card or cash at a barrier toll. Vinci Autoroutes warns that without a badge you get stuck in the orange t lane, so use a lane that takes every payment method. French tolls explained has the lanes, classes and unpaid tolls, and the France toll calculator guide the price tools.

The table shows each seller's occasional-driver formula from its own site. Unused months cost nothing and none has a minimum term; tolls are billed on top.

Can a UK driver get a French toll tag?

Vinci Autoroutes says that if you live abroad you can use the Pass Ulys, that the Classic formula is made for occasional trips, weekends and holidays, and that you need a bank account at an institution in the Single Euro Payments Area. The European Commission's SEPA page lists the United Kingdom among the countries and territories in the scope of the SEPA schemes. Bip&Go asks for bank details with an IBAN and warns that some Swiss and British banks do not allow a direct debit in euros, so check with your bank. Fulli's pages do not say whether it takes customers who live outside France. Ask the seller before you order.

The French toll road tag on barrier-free motorways

On a free-flow stretch gantries read your number plate and try to detect a badge. The ministry says that if the badge is present and well fixed to the windscreen, you have nothing to do, and the passage shows on your monthly statement like a barrier toll. It also warns that a badge not fixed to the windscreen may not be detected and put you in default of payment. All three sellers say their badges work on free-flow motorways.

Without a badge, the ministry says, you have 72 hours to pay. Sanef says its gantries detect every plate whatever the country, that the payment options are the same for everyone and that for foreign vehicles the trip details can take a few extra hours to appear on sanef.com. The ministry says an unpaid toll brings a payment notice with a flat charge of 90 euros, reduced to 10 euros within 15 days, and a fine of 375 euros after two months.

What a tag does not cover

A badge pays motorway tolls; Vinci says the monthly fee is the rental of the badge. It does not replace the Crit'Air sticker for French low emission zones, which is a separate order (Crit'Air sticker guide), and it is not a vignette for Switzerland or Austria (how tolls and vignettes differ). Tolls at home work differently, as in UK toll bridges.

What BlitzBuddy does in France

BlitzBuddy does not buy, check or pay a toll tag. Its speed camera warnings work in five countries, France among them, and switch on by themselves when you arrive; in the UK, Ireland and every other country you get none, while your speed, your trips and reports from other drivers still work. In France it shows fixed speed cameras, red-light cameras and most average speed checks at their exact location, from the official list of the Ministry of the Interior. In France, article R413-15 of the Code de la route punishes holding, carrying or using a device that can detect or disturb the equipment used to record traffic offences with a fifth-class fine and the loss of six points, and its paragraph V, added by a decree of 3 January 2012, extends this to devices or products meant to warn of or inform about the location of that equipment; using these warnings is the driver's own responsibility. BlitzBuddy is free, with no ads and no subscription. It is available for iPhone; the Android version is coming soon.
