TomTom speed camera alerts are part of its sat navs and apps, and TomTom's own help pages are specific about how they work. On a TomTom sat nav the service depends on a paid subscription or an embedded trial. In the TomTom app you switch camera warnings on or off under Settings, and drivers can report cameras. TomTom also says it does not offer the service in Switzerland, Cyprus and North Macedonia, and asks drivers in Germany to keep alerts off while they drive. This guide sets out what those pages say on 16 October 2026, without ranking or testing anything. The help pages carry no date.
Which TomTom products have camera alerts
The help centre treats three families separately: the GO series of sat navs, the GO Expert app and the TomTom app. The App Store description of the TomTom app (version 13.69.0, released 28 September 2026) says you get speed camera alerts and current versus limit speed information, with community-powered reports for hazards, and that it works with Apple CarPlay. The settings and the reporting steps differ from one family to the next, which is why the settings table below is split by product.
What the subscription covers on a sat nav
TomTom says the Speed Camera services on its navigation devices are tied to a paid subscription or an embedded trial. A newly purchased device comes with a free trial whose length varies by model, and once the trial or subscription expires a device gives no warnings or alerts for speed cameras. To get updates you need an active Speed Camera subscription.
There is one exception on TomTom's updating page. For a list of models, including the GO Discover, GO Expert, GO Exclusive and GO Superior, updates to speed camera locations are included in map updates and are not offered separately. If alerts have stopped, TomTom suggests checking the service status on the device (under About in the main menu on Wi-Fi devices) and then the alert settings. This guide gives no prices; the TomTom web shop does.
Switching alerts on and off
| Product | Where to find it (TomTom) |
|---|---|
| TomTom (iOS and Android) | Menu, Settings, Warnings, Cameras, toggle Speed cameras off |
| GO Expert on Android | Menu, Settings, Sounds & Warnings, Alerts & Sounds, Cameras |
| GO Expert on iOS | Menu, Settings, Sounds & Warnings, Speed Camera Warnings |
| GO Discover, GO Expert, GO Exclusive and the others in that group | Main Menu, Settings, Sound, Alerts & Sounds, Cameras |
| GO 40 to GO 6200 Wi-Fi, GO Basic, GO Essential and the others in that group | Main Menu, Settings, Sounds & Warnings, switch Speed camera warnings |
On the GO Discover and Expert family each camera type has three options: Always, Only when speeding, or Never. By default the alert is Always for all camera types except Mobile hotspots, which is Never. TomTom adds that on an in-dash navigation system speed cameras might still show on the map after you disable them, and that removing them completely means uninstalling them.
Where TomTom says the service differs
TomTom's page "Are speed camera warnings legal?" is written by the company about its own service, not by a court or a ministry. It says speed camera laws vary by country, that TomTom adjusts or limits its services where the law requires it, and that you should always check and follow local traffic rules. Two of its entries:
| Country | What TomTom says it does |
|---|---|
| Germany | Asks you to turn off speed camera alerts before you start and keep them off while you drive |
| Switzerland, Cyprus, North Macedonia | Does not offer the service; other navigation features work as usual |
For the rules themselves, rely on the laws and not on any maker's summary: where speed camera warnings are allowed sets them out country by country from the official texts.
Reporting a camera
TomTom's own safety line comes first on its sat nav page: only report when it is safe to do so and, if possible, ask a passenger to help. The three families report in different ways:
- TomTom app. A report button in the bottom-right corner of the driving view offers Speed camera for a fixed camera and Mobile camera for a mobile one. TomTom says it is available on the phone and in CarPlay and Android Auto.
- GO Expert app. Reporting needs a planned route and uses the speed camera icon next to your current speed. TomTom says you cannot report a speed camera in Android Auto or CarPlay.
- Sat nav. A one-tap report through the speed camera icon next to your current speed. TomTom lists an active subscription and a Bluetooth link to your smartphone as conditions.
TomTom alerts and UK law
An undated Ask the Police answer from the Police National Legal Database (askthe.police.uk, read on 16 October 2026) says devices that only provide information about camera site locations are lawful in the UK, and that abroad even those may be unlawful. That is a police answer, not a statute. The four kinds of speed camera detector explains how that differs from a jammer. GOV.UK separately says it is illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav or other device while driving, with 6 penalty points and a £200 fine, and allows hands-free use such as a windscreen mount. For the camera alerts of another navigation app, read what Waze says about its camera alerts.
BlitzBuddy and TomTom's alerts
BlitzBuddy gives no speed camera warnings in the UK, Ireland or any other country outside the five where it warns; your speed, trips and reports from other drivers still work. BlitzBuddy is free, with no ads and no subscription. It is available for iPhone; the Android version is coming soon. It does not promise warnings for mobile speed cameras.
